MEETING

Updates were given first, as the man with the laptop & designs was running a bit late.

  • The online library catalog has 472 titles logged into it at this point; some discussion of what it was and why it was handy.
  • Finances: about $1000 in the Denali Alaskan account, approximately $4,000 in the Spirit of Alaska account. Amounts not exact as the holder of the checkbook forgot the current statement for the Spirit accounts. Total funds: roughtly $5,000.
  • Nancy Burnham offered to serve as temporary treasurer.
  • Discussion of incorporation: meeting next Sunday, Jan. 25, 3 pm, to prepare proposal for ECA (to be presented Feb. 22nd, 4 pm Hartung Hall). The ECA needs to work on its own filing and paperwork, but its situation shouldn't affect the library's (assuming membership okays separation). Potential members for the library's board of directors were suggested; librarians, construction professionals, grant writers, and accounting people were recommended.
  • Fundraising will use new drawings; a progress report should be available from the architects for the Feb. 22nd meeting.

The new design was presented as floor plans on paper printouts and a 3-D graphical represenation in three stages of construction: initial one-storey library with enough shelf space for approx. 16, 000 books; second floor above this; and expansion forward on main floor and second storey both. After some oohing and discussion, the group decided that it would be cheaper and easier to combine stages one and two into the creation of one two-storey shell, rather than building the roof and having to tear it off later and pop it up to the second storey, finishing off the interior later, and make the expansion into the main stacks and multipurpose area the second major stage.

The first stage will measure approximately 22 ft by 48 ft on each floor; the second stage will add roughly another 1000 sq ft.The architects will work on rendering the design more fully, and will send a link so that interested parties may view the 3-D design in Google SketchUp (links will be posted here when available).

The discussion of the lallapalooza was tabled for a future time.
