SUMMARY:Adult Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a discussion of “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini. This is from Amazon: \nTaking us from Afghanistan in the final days of its monarchy to the present\, The Kite Runner is the unforgettable and beautifully told story of the friendship between two boys growing up in Kabul. Raised in the same household and sharing the same wet nurse\, Amir and Hassan grow up in different worlds: Amir is the son of a prominent and wealthy man\, while Hassan\, the son of Amir’s father’s servant\, is a Hazara – a shunned ethnic minority. Their intertwined lives\, and their fates\, reflect the eventual tragedy of the world around them. When Amir and his father flee the country for a new life in California\, Amir thinks that he has escaped his past. And yet he cannot leave the memory of Hassan behind him. \nThe Kite Runner is a novel about friendship and betrayal\, and about the price of loyalty. It is about the bonds between fathers and sons\, and the power of fathers over sons – their love\, their sacrifices\, and their lies. Written against a backdrop of history that has not been told in fiction before\, The Kite Runner describes the rich culture and beauty of a land in the process of being destroyed. But through the devastation\, Khaled Hosseini offers hope for redemption.

SUMMARY:Adult Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion of “Why We Sleep”\, by Matthew Walker. \nThis is from Amazon: \nThe first sleep book by a leading scientific expert – Professor Matthew Walker\, director of UC Berkeley’s Sleep and Neuroimaging Lab – reveals his groundbreaking exploration of sleep\, explaining how we can harness its transformative power to change our lives for the better. \nSleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life\, wellness\, and longevity. Until very recently\, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep\, or what good it served\, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don’t sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life – eating\, drinking\, and reproducing – the purpose of sleep remained elusive. \nBut an explosion of scientific discoveries in the last 20 years has shed new light on this fundamental aspect of our lives. Now\, preeminent neuroscientist and sleep expert Matthew Walker gives us a new understanding of the vital importance of sleep and dreaming. Among so many other things\, within the brain\, sleep enriches our ability to learn\, memorize\, and make logical decisions. It recalibrates our emotions\, restocks our immune system\, fine-tunes our metabolism\, and regulates our appetite. Dreaming mollifies painful memories and creates a virtual reality space in which the brain melds past and present knowledge to inspire creativity. \nWalker answers important questions about sleep: How do caffeine and alcohol affect sleep? What really happens during REM sleep? Why do our sleep patterns change across a lifetime? How do common sleep aids affect us\, and can they do long-term damage? Charting cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs and synthesizing decades of research and clinical practice\, Walker explains how we can harness sleep to improve learning\, mood\, and energy levels; regulate hormones; prevent cancer\, Alzheimer’s\, and diabetes; slow the effects of aging; increase longevity; enhance the education and lifespan of our children\, and boost the efficiency\, success\, and productivity of our businesses. Clear-eyed\, fascinating\, and immensely accessible\, Why We Sleep is the crucial account on sleep that will forever change listeners’ minds on the subject.

SUMMARY:Annual Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a recap of the previous year\, and a look into the future of the John Trigg Ester Library! \nAdditionally\, we will be discussing the following topics for potential inclusion in updated Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation: \n\nChange to the name of the Organization\n\nReason for change to both Bylaws and Articles of Incorporation \n1) A search for “Ester Library” through Pick\, Click\, Give did not yield any results. If someone did not know the entire name (John Trigg Ester Library)\, they would not be able to donate to us. It is unknown how many other search engines do not recognize just “Ester Library” \n2) The Board felt that many residents in the current village population neither remembers John Trigg and/or recognizes his name \n3) The Board believes the Ester Village Library better represents who we are as well as where we are \nProposed change: Change the name of the Organization from the John Trigg Ester Library to Ester Village Library. These changes will occur in all applicable sections in both the Articles of Incorporation and the Bylaws. A commemorative ceremony and plaque honoring John Trigg will be dedicated at a time in the very near future. \n2.    Changes to the number of directors \nReason for change to the Bylaws \n\nWe have\, on occasion\, had difficulty filling board member positions\nState law allows dropping the number of board members to 3:\n\nAS 10.20.086 – The number of directors of a corporation shall be at least three. The number of directors shall be fixed by the bylaws…\nAS 10.20.121 – Two or more offices may be held by the same person\, except the offices of president and secretary.\n\n\n\n\nThe Board of Directors is proposing a new minimum of 5 board members with the following (2) text changes to the Bylaws:\n\nArticle V\, Section 2. NUMBER OF DIRECTORS. The board of directors may number seven (7): four (4) officers and three (3) additional elected directors. Two or more offices may be held by the same person\, except the offices of president and secretary. The minimum number of directors shall be five (5). \nArticle VI\, Section 1. DESIGNATION OF OFFICERS. The officers of the corporation shall\, at a minimum\, be two: a president and a secretary.  The positions of vice president and treasurer can be combined into the president and secretary positions. \n3.     Change from Robert’s Rules of Order to Modern Rules of Order \n            Reason for change to the Bylaws \n\nThe Modern Rules of Order are not as cumbersome as Robert’s Rules. For example\, if all members present come to a unanimous consensus\, there is no reason for a formal vote (motion to vote\, etc).\nFormal voting will still occur if there is no unanimous consent\nThe Board of Directors is proposing a change to the way Board meetings are conducted with the following (2) text changes to the Bylaws:\n\nArticle IV\, Section 10: Conduct of Meeting. …. Membership meetings will be conducted based on Modern Rules of Order \nArticle V\, Section 13: Conduct of Meeting …. Board of directors meetings will be conducted based on Modern Rules of Order. \n4. Change to number of check signers \n        Reason for change to the Bylaws – We have had single signer checks for several years. This change to the Bylaws officially recognizes this with the following word change: \nArticle VIII\, Section 2: CHECKS AND NOTES. Except as otherwise specifically determined by resolution of the board of directors\, or as otherwise required by law\, checks\, drafts\, promissory notes\, orders for the payment of money\, and other evidence of indebtedness of the corporation shall be signed by one officer of the corporation.

SUMMARY:Adult Book Club
DESCRIPTION:This month’s selection: West With Giraffes\, by Lynda Rutledge \nFrom Amazon: \nWoodrow Wilson Nickel\, age 105\, feels his life ebbing away. But when he learns giraffes are going extinct\, he finds himself recalling the unforgettable experience he cannot take to his grave. \nIt’s 1938. The Great Depression lingers. Hitler is threatening Europe\, and world-weary Americans long for wonder. They find it in two giraffes who miraculously survive a hurricane while crossing the Atlantic. What follows is a twelve-day road trip in a custom truck to deliver Southern California’s first giraffes to the San Diego Zoo. Behind the wheel is the young Dust Bowl rowdy Woodrow. Inspired by true events\, the tale weaves real-life figures with fictional ones\, including the world’s first female zoo director\, a crusty old man with a past\, a young female photographer with a secret\, and assorted reprobates as spotty as the giraffes. \nPart adventure\, part historical saga\, and part coming-of-age love story\, West with Giraffes explores what it means to be changed by the grace of animals\, the kindness of strangers\, the passing of time\, and a story told before it’s too late.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Siddhartha\, by Herman Hesse \nWhen Herman Hesse visited India in the early days of the 20th century\, he was captivated by the people\, their customs\, their culture\, and their religion. On returning to Germany\, he wrote a masterpiece on a young man’s search for identity and meaning in a civilization that has lost its way. Loosely based on the early life of the Buddha\, the book documents the journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening of a character called Siddhartha. \nThe name Siddhartha was the one the Buddha was known by before his renunciation. Siddhartha in Sanskrit is translated as “Siddha” (achieved) and “artha” (what was searched for). The novel follows Siddhartha from a life of comfort of privilege to his quest for truth in a world plagued by sorrow and suffering. \nThe themes of Siddhartha are universal in that they are an account of a young person’s search for meaning — one that all readers can relate to. As Hesse skillfully takes us on a journey\, he uses his poetic prose to challenge our preconceived notions of what a spiritual life and meaningful self-enrichment entail. Blind adherence to all systems of belief is shunned in favor of living in the moment and appreciating its ever-changing nature. Generations of readers have and will continue to find wisdom in the pages of Siddhartha.

DESCRIPTION:Blue Highways\, A Journey into America\, by William Least Heat Moon \nHailed as a masterpiece of American travel writing\, Blue Highways is an unforgettable journey along our nation’s backroads.\n\nWilliam Least Heat-Moon set out with little more than the need to put home behind him and a sense of curiosity about “those little towns that get on the map — if they get on at all — only because some cartographer has a blank space to fill: Remote\, Oregon; Simplicity\, Virginia; New Freedom\, Pennsylvania; New Hope\, Tennessee; Why\, Arizona; Whynot\, Mississippi.” \nHis adventures\, his discoveries\, and his recollections of the extraordinary people he encountered along the way amount to a revelation of the true American experience.

DESCRIPTION:This month’s title: That Librarian\, by Amanda Jones \n“Amanda Jones started getting death threats\, all for standing up for our right to read . . . but she’s not stopped fighting against book bans or stopped advocating for access to diverse stories.”-Oprah Winfrey\, in a speech at the 2023 National Book Awards\n\nPart memoir\, part manifesto\, the inspiring story of a Louisiana librarian advocating for inclusivity on the front lines of our vicious culture wars. \nOne of the things small town librarian Amanda Jones values most about books is how they can affirm a young person’s sense of self. So in 2022\, when she caught wind of a local public hearing that would discuss “book content\,” she knew what was at stake. Schools and libraries nationwide have been bombarded by demands for books with LGTBQ+ references\, discussions of racism\, and more to be purged from the shelves. Amanda would be damned if her community were to ban stories representing minority groups. She spoke out that night at the meeting. Days later\, she woke up to a nightmare that is still ongoing. \nAmanda Jones has been called a groomer\, a pedo\, and a porn-pusher; she has faced death threats and attacks from strangers and friends alike. Her decision to support a collection of books with diverse perspectives made her a target for extremists using book banning campaigns-funded by dark money organizations and advanced by hard right politicians-in a crusade to make America more white\, straight\, and “Christian.” But Amanda Jones wouldn’t give up without a fight: she sued her harassers for defamation and urged others to join her in the resistance. \nMapping the book banning crisis occurring all across the nation\, That Librarian draws the battle lines in the war against equity and inclusion\, calling book lovers everywhere to rise in defense of our readers.

DESCRIPTION:The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA\, by James D. Watson \nBy identifying the structure of DNA\, the molecule of life\, Francis Crick and James Watson revolutionized biochemistry and won themselves a Nobel Prize. At the time\, Watson was only 24\, a young scientist hungry to make his mark. His uncompromisingly honest account of the heady days of their thrilling sprint against other world-class researchers to solve one of science’s greatest mysteries gives a dazzlingly clear picture of a world of brilliant scientists with great gifts\, very human ambitions\, and bitter rivalries. \nWith humility unspoiled by false modesty\, Watson relates his and Crick’s desperate efforts to beat Linus Pauling to the Holy Grail of life sciences: the identification of the basic building block of life. Never has a scientist been so truthful in capturing in words the flavor of his work.

DESCRIPTION:At the Bright Edge of the World\, by Eowyn Ivey \nFrom the best-selling author of The Snow Child\, a thrilling tale of historical adventure set in the Alaskan wilderness. \nIn the winter of 1885\, Lieutenant Colonel Allen Forrester sets out with his men on an expedition into the newly acquired territory of Alaska. Their objective: to travel up the ferocious Wolverine River\, mapping the interior and gathering information on the region’s potentially dangerous native tribes. With a young and newly pregnant wife at home\, Forrester is anxious to complete the journey with all possible speed and return to her. But once the crew passes beyond the edge of the known world\, there’s no telling what awaits them. \nWith gorgeous descriptions of the Alaskan wilds and a vivid cast of characters – including Forrester; his wife\, Sophie; a mysterious Eyak guide; and a Native American woman who joins the expedition – To the Bright Edge of the World is an epic tale of one of America’s last frontiers\, combining myth\, history\, romance\, and adventure.

SUMMARY:Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Atlas Shrugged\, by Ayn Rand \nAtlas Shrugged is the “second most influential book for Americans today” after the Bible\, according to a joint survey of five thousand people conducted by the Library of Congress and the Book of the Month Club in 1991. \nIn a scrap heap within an abandoned factory\, the greatest invention in history lies dormant and unused. By what fatal error of judgment has its value gone unrecognized\, its brilliant inventor punished rather than rewarded for his efforts? \nThis is the story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world—and did. In defense of those greatest of human qualities that have made civilization possible\, he sets out to show what would happen to the world if all the heroes of innovation and industry went on strike. Is he a destroyer or a liberator? Why does he have to fight his battle not against his enemies but against those who need him most? Why does he fight his hardest battle against the woman he loves? The answers will be revealed once you discover the reason behind the baffling events that wreak havoc on the lives of the amazing men and women in this remarkable book. \nTremendous in scope and breathtaking in its suspense\, Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand’s magnum opus\, which launched an ideology and a movement. With the publication of this work in 1957\, Rand gained an instant following and became a phenomenon. Atlas Shrugged emerged as a premier moral apologia for capitalism\, a defense that had an electrifying effect on millions of readers (and now listeners) who had never heard capitalism defended in other than technical terms.

DESCRIPTION:A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson \nBack in America after twenty years in Britain\, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2\,100-mile Appalachian Trail\, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes—and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson\, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings. \nFor a start there’s the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz\, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. But A Walk in the Woods is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson’s acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail\, and as he tells its fascinating history\, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America’s last great wilderness. An adventure\, a comedy\, and a celebration\, A Walk in the Woods is a modern classic of travel literature.

DESCRIPTION:An Immense World\, by Ed Yong \nThe Earth teems with sights and textures\, sounds and vibrations\, smells and tastes\, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal\, including humans\, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble\, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. \nIn An Immense World\, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses\, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent\, waves of electromagnetism\, and pulses of pressure that surround us. We encounter beetles that are drawn to fires\, turtles that can track the Earth’s magnetic fields\, fish that fill rivers with electrical messages\, and even humans who wield sonar like bats. We discover that a crocodile’s scaly face is as sensitive as a lover’s fingertips\, that the eyes of a giant squid evolved to see sparkling whales\, that plants thrum with the inaudible songs of courting bugs\, and that even simple scallops have complex vision. We learn what bees see in flowers\, what songbirds hear in their tunes\, and what dogs smell on the street. We listen to stories of pivotal discoveries in the field\, while looking ahead at the many mysteries that remain unsolved. \nFunny\, rigorous\, and suffused with the joy of discovery\, An Immense World takes us on what Marcel Proust called “the only true voyage . . . not to visit strange lands\, but to possess other eyes.” \nWINNER OF THE ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL FINALIST FOR THE KIRKUS PRIZE FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD LONGLISTED FOR THE PEN/E.O. Volunteers are 42 percent more likely to be very happy than non-volunteers. (Source: Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey)\nThe happiness difference between givers and non-givers is not due to differences in personal characteristics\, income or religion. Imagine two people identical in terms of income\, faith\, age\, education\, politics\, gender and family circumstances\, but one is a donor and volunteers and the other doesn’t.
